RETURN TO MONTAUK in Competition at 67th International Berlin Film Festival

RETURN TO MONTAUK (DE/FR/IE 2017), Volker Schlöndorff’s newest feature film, will have its international premiere in this year’s Berlinale Competition. For the German theatrical release on May 11, Schlöndorff’s production material will be available on the virtual exhibition.

The film, inspired by Max Frisch’s novel Montauk, features writer Max Zorn (Stellan Skarsgård), his wife Clara (Susanne Wolff) who works on publishing his newest book, and Max’s long-lost love Rebecca (Nina Hoss), with whom he returns to Montauk for one weekend, a place where they once were happy together.

50th anniversary: YOUNG TÖRLESS

50 years ago, 27 year old Volker Schlöndorff presents his first feature film YOUNG TÖRLESS at the International Film Festival in Cannes. His adaptation of Robert Musil’s acclaimed novel becomes a surprise hit, the FIPRESCI-jury honors Schlöndorff with the Critics’ Prize. The excitement for Schlöndorff’s debut is not shared by all parties: The representation of torture and Törless’ more intellectual, passive reaction to it causes a scandal. YOUNG TÖRLESS is regarded as the beginning of the New German Cinema and launched Volker Schlöndorff’s international career as a major filmmaker.

To honor this special anniversary, the Deutsches Filmmuseum, Frankfurt am Main, exhibits exclusive archive material from the Volker Schlöndorff Collection in its foyer. The virtual exhibition will sucessively present new findings from the Schlöndorff Collection online. We start today with casting photos of Mathieu Carrière and Bernd Tischer, which Schlöndorff himself took with his Leica.
