50 years ago, 27 year old Volker Schlöndorff presents his first feature film YOUNG TÖRLESS at the International Film Festival in Cannes. His adaptation of Robert Musil’s acclaimed novel becomes a surprise hit, the FIPRESCI-jury honors Schlöndorff with the Critics’ Prize. The excitement for Schlöndorff’s debut is not shared by all parties: The representation of torture and Törless’ more intellectual, passive reaction to it causes a scandal. YOUNG TÖRLESS is regarded as the beginning of the New German Cinema and launched Volker Schlöndorff’s international career as a major filmmaker.

To honor this special anniversary, the Deutsches Filmmuseum, Frankfurt am Main, exhibits exclusive archive material from the Volker Schlöndorff Collection in its foyer.The virtual exhibition will sucessively present new findings from the Schlöndorff Collection online.
